I've always been a Captain America fan, more specifically a Steve Rogers Captain America fan, and this was an obvious buy for me this week. There was plenty of controversy leading into this issue and it seems that Marvel knew this would happen. Brilliantly they did so the same day DC Rebirth was released. This allowed Marvel to dominate many headlines that Rebirth had hoped to claim. With that said, this issue was not only an excellent installment of Captain America it also changes the scope for the character in the future to come.
The opening pages of Steve Rogers Captain America #1were powerful and told a moment of Steve Rogers life in an articulate and passionate way. I felt for Sarah Rogers and the affliction she dealt with. Once this mini story concludes to open the book its the next page and panel that brings Captain America back to the forefront. In the pages to follow it tells an emotional story about a young kid getting recruited to Hydra. These pages are powerful and it gives perspective on Red Skull and what Hydra is doing, but it really tells an emotional story about a kid recruited to Hydra and the impact joining the group can have. These panels included some of the best writing I've witnessed in a long time. The panels and art lends brilliantly to the story. With the use of Red Skull and Baron Zemo this book leaves no room to breathe, which for the first time in a long time, I am okay with. This book pulls at the heartstrings in many ways and that's the best part about this issue.
Overall Steve Rogers Captain America #1 is a powerful tale. It opens with impact and refuses to pull any punches as it continues. This book had me hooked page after page and the many unexpected moments kept my page turning quickly. This is a great Captain America book and the ending is nothing to shy away at. I can't wait to see where this series goes from here!
