Dylan must now kill a person once a month in order to stay alive. He must fight to keep his secret from his friends as well as his identity from those who could end his life before the demon does. Brubaker tells a compelling story that focuses more on character than on the actions he must undergo. The story focuses more on Dylan's struggling relationship with his best friend, whom he also happens to be in love with. Dylan fights to stay alive so he doesn't miss out on the possibilities on a love that could happen. However, will Dylan's deal with the demon tear away his humanity before he has a chance to confess his feelings? -

Unbeknownst to him, there are forces off world that wish to take the sword back, leaving Emmett back to his mental anguish. The story does well to make the reader feel for Emmett in his quest to reconnect with his son and family that his condition has taken away from him. It also does well to keep backstory saved for a later date as it builds the world and the encounters on the way. -
